The idea for Maple Island Pie Factory began in January of 2007. Vicki contacted the Starting Block in Hart, Michign where she received plenty of help in how to be an entrepreneur. For the first 10 months, she and her workers traveled the 30 miles to the licensed kitchen to bake and then sold her pies at home, to restaurants and Farmer's Markets.
By mid summer she realized that in order to expand, it would be necessary to make some adjustments. In September she hired a contractor to build a professional kitchen on the back of her home. It was completed just in time for the Thanksgiving rush. With this accomplishment, Vicki became the first "graduate" from the Starting Block to start her own kitchen and become self-sufficient. With the new kitchen, and now affectionately known as "The Pie Lady," she was able to experiment with new recipes and add to the 15 varieties of fruit and cream pies.
After 4 years of traveling to several Farmer's Markets, Art Festivals and Local Events, she had build up quite a customer base. It was always in the back of her mind that some day she would have her own store. The time seemed right in 2011 with the Ice Cream store (just two miles from home) for sale. After all, ice cream and pie go so well together. It has proven to be the right move.
